Lenzerheide’s transformation into the “Bike Kingdom” is a masterclass in vision and branding. What began as a popular ski destination now boasts over 900 km of marked trails, including purpose-built flow trails, technical enduro lines, and downhill runs that have hosted UCI World Cups. The area connects with nearby Arosa and Chur, creating a truly massive playground for all disciplines of MTB. The Bike Kingdom app gamifies the experience, offering challenges and rewards, while regular events like the “Bike Kingdom Games” bring in a global crowd.

2. 7stanes, Scotland

Funded and developed by Forestry and Land Scotland, the 7stanes network sprawls across the south of Scotland, linking seven key trail centres: Glentress, Innerleithen, Dalbeattie, Mabie, Ae, Glentrool, and Newcastleton. Each location offers something unique, from flowing blue routes to hardcore black-graded descents. Together, they represent one of the most comprehensive and accessible MTB offerings in Europe, suitable for all skill levels. Glentress is currently undergoing a £8 million redevelopment, adding new trails, improving infrastructure, and building a state-of-the-art visitor centre.

3. Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang-Fieberbrunn, Austria

This interconnected region in the Austrian Alps has become a single, massive mountain biking destination, thanks to the merger of several lift-accessed bike parks and trail systems. Riders can access hundreds of kilometres of trails with a single pass, ranging from bike park laps in Leogang to scenic alpine traverses between towns. Leogang is especially notable for its role in hosting World Championships and being home to one of the most modern bike parks in Europe.

4. Trentino Bike Zone, Italy

The Trentino region in northern Italy is investing heavily in mountain biking, with plans for over 1,000 km of new trails across various valleys like Val di Sole, Paganella, and Garda Trentino. Known for its stunning scenery and big mountain rides, the area blends natural trails with manmade flow options and some of the most scenic enduro racing stages in Europe. It’s not just about the trails—Trentino’s development includes eco-friendly transport, sustainable accommodation, and digital trail navigation tools to improve the rider experience.

5. Fjord Norway Trail Network, Norway

Norway’s fjord regions are developing trail systems that rival the Alps, particularly around Voss and Sogndal. While still under heavy development, the long-term goal is to connect multiple fjords and towns with rideable trails that embrace Norway’s wild, raw terrain. These trails are being built with minimal environmental impact and maximum immersion in mind, making the riding experience both rugged and unforgettable.

Why It Matters for Northern Ireland

These developments aren’t just great for riders—they’re blueprints for economic growth, tourism, and community engagement. Northern Ireland, with its own stunning landscapes in places like the Mournes, Sperrins, and the Glens of Antrim, has untapped potential for something similar. Investing in world-class trail centres or interconnected networks can:

    1. Attract international visitors and events
    2. Support local businesses through tourism
    3. Encourage healthy, outdoor lifestyles
    4. Create jobs in construction, guiding, hospitality, and

        maintenance
    5. Foster pride and stewardship among local communities.

Europe is in the middle of a mountain biking revolution. The biggest trail developments show what's possible when vision meets investment. With Northern Ireland’s natural assets and growing MTB scene, there's never been a better time to learn from these trailblazing regions and start building something world-class right here.

If the Alps can do it, why not the Sperrins?
